Todd W. Butterfield began his formal market training at the Wyckoff Stock Market Institute, graduating in 1982. Shortly thereafter, he entered the U.S. Investment Championship — a real-money national trading competition — where he placed 12th in the nation, an early distinction that reflected his application of Wyckoff principles in live markets. He went on to graduate from Western Illinois University in 1984 and began his professional career as a stock, options, and commodities trader with Rialcor Shatkin in Chicago, Illinois, where he developed hands-on experience across multiple asset classes and market environments. In 1990, Mr. Butterfield registered as a Commodity Trading Advisor (CTA), supported by a successful four-year performance track record. The following year, in 1991, he joined Smith Barney in Quincy, Illinois, serving as a Financial Consultant and advising clients on investment strategy and portfolio management. In early 1997, he founded Butterfield Capital Advisors and Butterfield Futures. Through his Registered Investment Advisor practice, he provided fee-based investment management and advisory services, while also operating as an Introducing Broker offering futures brokerage capabilities. In 2011, Mr. Butterfield formed The BlackBay Group, an umbrella organization that includes BlackBay Capital Advisors, a registered investment advisory firm. Through this structure, he continues to provide investment management, research, and strategic advisory services. Mr. Butterfield currently serves as President and Chief Strategist of the Wyckoff Stock Market Institute, where he leads research, market analysis, and educational development rooted in the original Wyckoff Method. In addition to his institutional work, he is active in digital asset education and research. He is the founder of LearnCrypto.io, where he publishes cryptocurrency and Wyckoff-based trading courses, and he co-hosts a market analysis program covering equities and crypto markets. He also contributes educational research to the LearnCrypto community and manages digital asset for clients at CryptoPCG.com. In April 2022, he expanded Wyckoff education internationally with the launch of WyckoffSMIChina.com, supporting the Institute’s growing Chinese-language trading community.
